They are creating more play time through having players repeating the same processes for a chance at getting specific items. And while it's addicting to get that one item and getting a dopamine rush, I wouldn't want to play every game that way.
I think this is what gets most people. I don't know what players expected but when I first heard about Destiny I knew it that was going to be Diablo in space. In loot intensive games like Diablo and Borderlands, the loot IS the game. You can call Destiny an MMO, or a "shared world shooter" but at heart it's just a dungeon-crawler with loot at the end. If you are not playing for that aspect then you are really missing the point here. This is how it worked in Diablo 3 also, new loot was too good to pass up and some vanilla legendaries would stay at level 60 instead of going up to 70. I don't recall anyone on the Diablo forums complaining about their gear not carrying over. I believe this is what's going on here, Bungie created one game while the players are playing a completely different one. I have asked myself this question before "If Bungie got rid of all gun varieties and just gave us a couple guns like in Halo, would people still enjoy it?" Probably not.

 • I haven't played Diablo, but I have played Borderlands. As for Borderlands, there is focus on loot, but there is also a huge focus on character building and skill trees. Even the badsss points system allows you to transfer some progress you've made on one character to the next. Getting to max level and max skills trees takes a lot of dedication while loot is something that comes and goes. Let's say for example that character building getting to max level and max skills takes up 70% of your time and dedication. This means 30% is for loot and collecting gear you want to keep. Destiny doesn't focus on character as much as it does loot. I would say 10% would be focused on your character and 90% would be obtaining loot. Even in TTK, they're giving people that have low level characters a level 25 boost, which proves they want people to get their characters playing the end game ad fast as possible. This means they're focusing more on loot. So if Borderlands has a 30% focus on loot and Destiny has a 90% focus on loot, what does it mean when they invalidate loot to make room for more stuff? This means Borderlands invalidates 30% of players time in game, while Destiny would invalidate 90%, since all we can really bring forward is our characters. This is how I see it. If Destiny would only focus on characters more, I think it wouldn't be such a hard hit for players. While shared world shooters should focus on loot, I think that it shouldn't be such a priority that it becomes a let down when more content is released. This is the balance that Bungie should strive for, but they clearly aren't because they are basically giving away end-game characters for free and reworking more on end-game loot.

 • Haha you have made an excellent point. Everyone is so -blam!-ing dumb in these forums that I never expected someone to post something that would make me change the way I thought about the way Bungie is handling Destiny. The thing that Diablo and Borderlands have in common is that they have great synergies in their skill trees. Synergies hold up on their own unless you are playing endgame content, then you would need to look for specific gear that complemented your build. Destiny has half-assed builds without exotics. While I've never had a problem with legendaries not moving on, exotics are the only way to make builds work and thus allowing players so safely make it through endgame. I blame this on Bungie/Activision for trying to make an extremely casual game. Casuals can't be bothered to spend time figuring out builds or look for build-specific gear (according to Activisions researchers and shareholders no doubt.) There is no way to find an even ground between casual gameplay and core gameplay without Bungie taking a huge risk and taking Destiny back to the drawing board, which would be a big no-no especially if they are trying hard to make people still play this game in between dev cycles. So I guess while skills in Destiny are lackluster then we are going to need to turn to gear to build our characters. One of the reasons why I don't really complain about Destiny is because it's still a fun game to me even with all its flaws. I realized a while ago that Bungie is not going to try and fix the game completely and will just keep pushing DLC after DLC, it's no completely their fault since Activision is behind all of this.
