They are creating more play time through having players repeating the same processes for a chance at getting specific items. And while it's addicting to get that one item and getting a dopamine rush, I wouldn't want to play every game that way.
I think this is what gets most people. I don't know what players expected but when I first heard about Destiny I knew it that was going to be Diablo in space. In loot intensive games like Diablo and Borderlands, the loot IS the game. You can call Destiny an MMO, or a "shared world shooter" but at heart it's just a dungeon-crawler with loot at the end. If you are not playing for that aspect then you are really missing the point here.
This is how it worked in Diablo 3 also, new loot was too good to pass up and some vanilla legendaries would stay at level 60 instead of going up to 70. I don't recall anyone on the Diablo forums complaining about their gear not carrying over. I believe this is what's going on here, Bungie created one game while the players are playing a completely different one.
I have asked myself this question before "If Bungie got rid of all gun varieties and just gave us a couple guns like in Halo, would people still enjoy it?" Probably not.
