I haven't played Diablo, but I have played Borderlands. As for Borderlands, there is focus on loot, but there is also a huge focus on character building and skill trees. Even the badsss points system allows you to transfer some progress you've made on one character to the next. Getting to max level and max skills trees takes a lot of dedication while loot is something that comes and goes. Let's say for example that character building getting to max level and max skills takes up 70% of your time and dedication. This means 30% is for loot and collecting gear you want to keep. Destiny doesn't focus on character as much as it does loot. I would say 10% would be focused on your character and 90% would be obtaining loot. Even in TTK, they're giving people that have low level characters a level 25 boost, which proves they want people to get their characters playing the end game ad fast as possible. This means they're focusing more on loot. So if Borderlands has a 30% focus on loot and Destiny has a 90% focus on loot, what does it mean when they invalidate loot to make room for more stuff? This means Borderlands invalidates 30% of players time in game, while Destiny would invalidate 90%, since all we can really bring forward is our characters. This is how I see it. If Destiny would only focus on characters more, I think it wouldn't be such a hard hit for players. While shared world shooters should focus on loot, I think that it shouldn't be such a priority that it becomes a let down when more content is released. This is the balance that Bungie should strive for, but they clearly aren't because they are basically giving away end-game characters for free and reworking more on end-game loot.
