The traveler has an instinct to run away and be chased. How do you know the traveler wanted to stay? You don't, it isn't in the grimoire. It's all fan speculation. We will find out the truth in future games.

Actually, it is in the Grimoire. The Traveler (AKA Alpha Lupi) was tired of running and seeing her children die. She wanted to stay and fight. The Darkness caused the Collapse, and it took the combined (although completely separate) efforts of the Traveler and Rasputin to save us
The following details are drawn from multiple sources, including in-game flavor text and conversations, grimoire card text, and conversations directly with Bungie developers.
Game informer wouldn't post something they weren't 100 percent certain about. I actually thought that Rasputin launched the nukes as well before reading the article.

There's no way anybody knows that for sure. Bungie wouldn't throw away the story on the first game.

One of the main reasons people left destiny was because of the lack of story. Knowing that destiny is more than meets the eye can help attract new player or bring old players back. There is still lots to discover about the darkness and the traveller.
