Or I could have been like them ... And hide behind the pillar, which actually puts less damage on the boss than up top.

Don't see why any of you needed to hide. I always think the guy sitting up there just makes it tougher on the guys down near the boss, as they get way more fire directed at them, and all the enemies. You can't really cover them that well from up there.
