Are you ok with Kojima replacing David Hayter with Kiefer Sutherland?

So i'm so used to his voice that i'm not sure I can really feel at home with Kiefer Sutherland. The change makes no sense to me either since Kojima had the same Japanese voice actor for Snake literally voice both Big Boss and Solid Snake in the games. Not having David Hayter for this final MGS Kojima game feels like a giant slap in the face of the man who has been voicing Snake for almost 20 years.

  • Snake/David will always always be hayter but Sutherland knocked it out of the park as big boss. He and robin atkin downes killed it, you can just hear the anger in kaz's voice

  • I understand why people are mad (I was a little shocked when I found out too) but I think it's an interesting change.

    • I think Big Boss should have sounded different from Solid Snake. That was one of the things I didn't like about the MGS series.

        • I found it super distracting in the prologue. I miss Hayter.

        • I'm okay with it. As I understand it, MGSV is the transition from Snake to Big Boss, and as such, his voice will emphasize the change, as does his arm and the metal "horn" lodged in his head. Notice how in the end of MGS4 *spoiler ahead!* Big Boss and Snake do not have the same voice despite that fact that they're (essentially) the same person and (probably) the same age. *spoiler over* It's jarring to hear another voice coming out of Snake, I don't know if going to get used to it, but there is a purpose behind it.

        • I still think there's going to be a massive switcheroo/ plot twist. After all, before "Les Enfants Terible" they tried to do a basic cloning of Big Boss.

        • It's Kojima, there's gotta be some ruse in place.

Hayter is, and always will be, Snake. I think MGSV represents a turning point for Big Boss, the beginning of his transition into a villain. I think this version of Snake is supposed to be broken inside and full of anguish, hate, rage, and other negative emotions. These kind of emotions are atypical of previous incarnations of Snake, and Hayter hasn't had to voice a character filled with such negativity (not saying he couldn't). Keifer has, and did a pretty good job (here's to you, Jack Bauer). I don't know the real reason behind Hayter's replacement, but I think Keifer will do fine. I'm more worried about the apparent lack of lines Venom Snake is supposed to have.

          • The problem is, most gamers that visit this forum are not really familiar with David Hayter, so they don't care I do mind, why replace something that was already good and perfect for the game... I don't understand why was David replaced, Kiefer is way more famous and all, a great actor too but I don't Ike that change Now if you asked if you'd be OK with the voice of masterchief bring replaced there would be riot, so that's how I feel about the voice actor change

          • Honestly I feel like we'll be in for a surprise at the end considering this game wraps everything up all the way into the original Metal Gear, where Solid has to infiltrate Outer Haven. Now granted, I could be wrong but this is something I feel like Kojima-san as amazing as he is would do to us, especially with how intricate he is about western views and such on his games. Who knows, but I know that game is going to take over my life for a long time.

          • I don't get attached to voices on characters. The thing for me though is i've been watching Sutherland since Lost Boys back in the 80's. I've been watching his work far longer than Hayters so having Sutherland voicing Snake is okay by me.

          • It was kind of weird that they had the same voice and somewhat confusing if you didn't know Solid was a clone. But I think it was Kiefer at the end of MGS4 who voiced Big Boss anyways, so it still works.

            • Yeah, I know the feeling. But Kiefers voice has grown on me over the years, so much so that I see him now as Big Boss rather than David. However, David will always be solid snake in my eyes.

            • If he'd replaced Solid Snake's voice I'd be livid. As it is I always felt Big Boss should have had a different voice. They're not 100% genetically identical and they didn't grow up in the same place so it doesn't make sense for them to have the same voice. Keifer Sutherland killed it in GZ. And from what I've seen of TPP he sounds great. "When the time comes... I'll pull the trigger."

Hayter's voice is iconic, but at the same time I couldn't help but feel that around the time of MGS3 he had begun to do a parody of Snake's voice as opposed to his relatively natural performances in MGS1 and 2. His acting in MGS4 was understandably painful sounding, but in Peace Walker it was ridiculous that he kept the Old Snake voice for a not-old Big Boss. Keifer does a good job as Big Boss, with a more subdued performance that really suits the character.

              • Last metal gear I played was either 3 or twin snakes. I don't really know the difference.

Absolutely. I try imagining Hayter's voice with Big Boss' Phantom Pain dialogue, and it just sounds comical. If it was Hayter's voice in this trailer, I don't think I would've taken Big Boss seriously. Hayter's performance in Peace Walker wasn't that good either.
