Guild wars 2 is now free to play. I suggest you get it and learn what a real MMO looks like. Add me at JDubsH, I would love to run dungeons with anyone who joins. But until you do, don't call Destiny an MMO, its embarrassing. Seriously.

It may not be a traditional MMO, but Bungie seems to enjoy taking the very worst aspects of an MMO and mashing them into this game, including: - Making everything useless after an "expansion" (i.e. DLC) - Perpetuating grinds - RNGesus - Repetition ad nauseam

*game has barebones MMO elements, like 3 or 4* Community: DESTINY IS AN MMO. HANDS DOWN. This has got to be the dumbest community I've ever halfway tried to be a part of The most you can have in a fireteam: 6. You have two "social spaces" where you can point, dance, wave, and sit. No other forms of communication with other players. Do I really need to go on ? I can drive a car very well, does that make me a professional driver ? NO. Just because something SHARES traits of something else, DOES NOT MEAN IT'S THE SAME THING.

I've been looking for a new game(s) to play in a couple of weeks. I have no intention of buying TTK until I find out if they have lied to everyone yet again. That's a really hard thing to do since the group I have been running with will probably get it. Does anyone have any suggestions for the PS3 (the price tag on the PS4 is a little too high) or the PC? I was looking at Elder Scrolls and Battlefront.

Put in definition of MMO in Google. The response... An MMO, or massively multiplayer online game, is a game that thousands of participants can play simultaneously over the internet. Some MMO games offer voice chat, in which players can wear a headset and talk to other unseen players online. I think destiny does all of those things. Hence it being called an MMO. You can debate how good the game is compared to others. But it does fall under the definition of MMO

I wouldn't even call GW2 a true MMO. You need true potential for large gatherings, like WoW, Asheron's Call, or ESO.
-
Everyone knows destiny is not an mmo. Or at least, they should.
-
GW2 is MMO lite.
-
I prefer planetside 2 :) a lot of fun especially when sniping
-
I've sunk about 800 hours into Destiny and have yet to play an MMO...
-
Agreed, destiny is not an MMO.
-
Destiny's a Quasi-MMO FPS, only some elements of MMO were taken for the game, not all. Bungie never established Destiny as an MMO.
-
I don't call Destiny anything but a game I like to play.
-
It got MMO traits.
-
It's a FPS but doesn't let you "unlock" gear/weapons. Instead gear is a random drop which is something MMOs like to do. The feeble attempt at stats is also MMOish, but not a lot ore than window dressing.
-
People recognize a lot of elements from WoW (grinding for loot, rep, mats, gear obsolescence, raids etc.) and then they rightfully conclude: Destiny is more than a simple FPS. WoW is an MMORPG and over time that mouthful of a term shortened to MMO (a term that says nothing except that a lot of people interact online). So people think WoW=MMO, and then began to call Destiny an MMOFPS. But there is no massive online element to Destiny, all activities feature 3-12 guardians, that's it. So they should call Destiny a FPS/RPG hybrid, but I fear people cling to much to that idiotic MMO-moniker...

In MMOs weapons/gear don't change how you play are any mechanics they just make you stronger. There are some exceptions like gear that makes you more mobile/tanky/ect but overall gear is purely stats. In DESTINY weapons and exotic Armour pieces change everything from how you move to how you plan and fight. It's sorta mobaish in destiny how you can swap some weapons or an exotic armor piece and suddenly be a totally different type of badass.

Good job I dont think Destiny is an MMO then.

So tired of seeing to many of these posts from people that don't understand that this game does fall into the category of MMO. That this will be a waste of time and easier to let my mute list grow bigger by adding one more person.
-
I completely agree with you. I too know what an MMO looks like. Though I haven't played some of the newer and more popular ones, I have played runescape. I can tell u right now that though destiny and runescape are completely different compared to each other, destiny is no where close to being an MMO. I dont care if people say its an MMO hybrid. Its still not an MMO period! I also have watched plenty of lets plays in other MMO'S, to know that destiny doesn't have very many features that are comparable to an MMO. One thing that really bugs me however is that the leveling system has almost no level progression and is very unlike any other game. And just because the game has open public areas does not mean anything. This game is a first person shooter RPJ. MMO has nothing to do with this game.

I played GW2 for a long time. Also played WOW for many years, and before that, I played the original EQ. I'm an MMO veteran who never played a FPS until now... The reason I'm still playing and loving Destiny, is because it's so much like an MMO, but better. If you think grinding, or being excluded from content because of gear, is bad in Destiny, then yes, go play a "real" MMO. And then come screaming and running back to a better quality of life. I'm not saying that traditional MMOs are bad. In fact I've loved all the ones I used to play, including GW2. But Destiny is an MMO, and more. And I'm thankful for that, because even though my aim sucks, I know how to play an MMO :)

It is one
-
been gaming since 87' pretty damn sure I know what a MMO is , don't need to play a wannabe WoW game to learn what I already know . probably been playing MMO games before you started potty training . your trash post belongs in community NOT feedback scrub
-
Got a lot of MMO elements though. So I will still say it's pretty much an MMO.

Edited by XaveBoy: 9/1/2015 4:14:07 AMWait, GW2 is free? Screw this, i bough it year ago for 40€.
-
It is a "MMO". It has elements related to the genre, but isn't really part of it.
-
It has ties to an mmo but is not purely mmo. That is the argument, nobody says its just an mmo.
