I love Mr. Fruit, but he's dead wrong about the Defender. I'm really tired of repeating myself, so I'll just copy/paste this from a comment I made not an hour ago (with some minor context and grammer alterations):
The Defender is solid if you know what you're doing. Blessings of Light drastically tilts the odds of a Primary vs. Primary fight in your favor, especially if you strafe in and out of your Bubble. You and your team will be almost unbeatable in the mid-range if WoD is placed well and utilized properly Weapons of Light makes all high Impact Sniper Rifles a OHKO on any Guardian without an Overshield, however you can't wander too far from your Bubble. Sniping with the Defender's Weapons of Light is like being a Sentry in a watchtower. I can hold a chokepoint on lock for 30-40 seconds, and anyone who comes into my gaze is all but certainly dead. I'm still being a Tank, or as close to one as you can get in an FPS, by defending that section of the map (no pun intended). Defenders are the only class that can take a Machine Gun to a Rocket fight by using WoD as a Blast Shield. This allows the Defender to rack up a huge kill-streak virtually unapposed once the enemy's heavy ammo is spent. Lastly, Suppressor Grenades can be used to cancel Supers, particularly Arc Blade and Radiance. Personally, I don't see any point in using Armor of Light. Any smart player should just avoid you or drop a Super on you. The only reason anyone finds any success with Armor is because Blueberries are still dumb enough to think Felwinter's Lie can solve any problem. When people stop being dumb, Armor stops being useful for anything aside from giving your opponents one less threat on the map for 30-45 seconds. There are very few people who even know how to use a Defender, which is why so many people complain about how "weak" they are. Even fewer people know how to travel and fight around the maps, which is why Shotguns "dominate" Crucible. In 2 or 3 years, maybe less, I suspect the Defender will be the most popular because it can control chokepoints better than any other class.
EDIT Holy. F-ing. Crap. I try to help people out and I get all the dislike votes? And they call us Hunters the jerks. Is there a reason for this? Is my analysis flawed, or are you that blinded by salt? EDIT 1.1 Yep. . . Yep, it's the salt. Ya'll some salty sea critters. EDIT DEUX It is really, really sad that a Gunslinger Main like myself knows how to make the most out of a Defender better than the lot of you. 93 of you and counting. It's almost Year 2, and you guys have learned nothing about your main class. EDIT NUMERO TRES Apparently, none of you are reading the entirety of this mini-thread, so here's a How-to on countering other Supers as a Defender:
If you place your Bubble well and use Weapons you can counter/survive most Supers. Vs. Arc Blade: Use Suppressor Grenades. Yes, I'm aware of the bug, but it has yet to fail me personally. Vs. Radiance: Use Suppressor Grenades and gun them down. Vs. Fist of Havoc: I tend to Suppress Titans on sight, but the bonus damage to your Sniper and Primary should be enough to kill them before they're close enough to Super you. Vs. Nova Bomb: Just sit tight inside the Bubble, Titan skate to safety if they're using Vortex. I will speak about Golden Gun at length because I'm very familiar with it. Gunslinger has to use 3 Sun Bullets to kill 1 Titan in a Bubble. 3 Sun Bullets that could have been used to kill 3 players instead of just 1; that's already a win for the Titan's team and I can't emphasize enough how wasteful it is to use Golden Gun on a Bubble. If you're fast you can Hard Scope with a Sniper and kill a Gunslinger between his 2nd and 3rd shot; Mr. Fruit made a similar play in a ToO video. Vs. Ward of Dawn: Dance Party! Use Gift of the Void in PvP. This way, even if you are Super'd to death, you'll generate an additional 3 Orbs for your Team.
EDIT FOUR Hey, Ive got an idea: how about you prove me wrong instead of down voting my post like childish Brats. Of course, if you could do that, you'd try to debate me instead of hiding behind your Down Clicks.

  • I'm not complaining. I'm saying that using Golden Gun to break Ward of Dawn is a terrible play on the Gunslinger's part; a play I never make. Unless that Titan is trying to steal our heavy Ammo, Golden Gun would be better used killing other players. If the Defender is hard scoping with a Sniper, then the Gunslinger can be killed between his second and third shots.

I mean... GG'ing a bubble just because you're super charged and see one is bad... if a bubble Titan has a choke point though? Never a bad call. At least no worse an idea than a bubble Titan using it's super at a choke point with high traffic. Just the strategic need at the time, not a waste. Edit: Oh but I agree on everything else!

  • Yeah, but I'd rather let the Titans and Warlocks take care of that, unless it drags on too long (or my Blueberries start feeding the Titan kills).

  • That's a pretty small window though, realistically holding a choke point just long enough for your team to get a 10 kill lead is it, a couple moments control of the flow of traffic in a game can be so critical... The game might go on but you're not likely to see a come back from the opposing team after that... I guess my point is more from the perspective of a hunter who DOESN'T underestimate the usefulness of well placed bubble Titan supers. The rest of them can enjoy their big purple ball of space magic.

  • True. If I recognized an expertly placed Bubble, I might not be too stingy with my Super. But I've yet to face off against a good Defender.

  • I recall then being way more common in Vanilla honestly...

  • Agreed, there is no reason to destroy the bubble usually.

  • Why the hell would anyone shoot rockets at a bubble?

That's exactly my point. The bubble is for cover. Use a Machine Gun while strafing in and out of the bubble to kill Rocket users. Then sweep the enemy team again after they respawn. Yes, it is more complicated in practice, but all builds are based upon Theory.

  • Sadly, Suppression Grenade is bugged and doesn't cancel Arcblade right now.

  • It does, so long as they're not mid swing. I've never had them bug out on me at all.

  • Lucky you. Every Bladedancer I meet never stops swinging.

  • Yup, but it's always worked for me whether they're swinging or not. Maybe the bug is specific to certain systems *shrug*. In any case, the bug will be fixed so my point still stands.

  • Ah idk. I play defender sorta differently than you. I use armor but I use suppression. I use shotty just cause.. But the way my armor is set up, my super comes back more from melee so armor of light is the best bet. I just never stay stationary in the bubble, I only gravitate back when I know I'm gonna have a big confrontation.

  • I don't see much point in Armor, but you could try using Gift of Light to generate tons of Orbs for your team.

  • You're using War Machine, not Gift of Light.

  • Well to be completely honest.. Although gift of light is good. People get rid of the force barrier shield pretty quickly so even trying to get another melee kill off while having the shield to produce one extra orb doesn't seem all that useful. War machine allows me to have basically QuickDraw and speed reload for in and out the bubble

  • I usually roll War Machine too. I just thought Armor of Light and Gift of Light have excellent synergy. I might test out Unbreakable next time I play with my Titan.

  • Unbreakable is only good if you can sustain damage and keep the shield. If it's blown out entirely the perk seem useless.

  • But the bubble can easily be destroyed by any other super, barring another bubble or a radiance warlock, killing all of those inside of it.

Read the Third Edit. And yes, Supers can kill other Supers, how is that different than any other class? I beat Golden Gun with Radiant Skin, Red Death, and Claws of Ahamkara just earlier this week; no Super is invulnerable or invincible.

  • I did but all of those for the moat part are extremely situational. It depends on the way you are facing, the layout of the map, the skill level of the players you are facing and some more. And I don't think that I have ever survived a nova bomb in my bubble as you say that you can. Sure Fist can shutdown supers like bladedancer and maybe radiance but the rest will completely decimate you before you get close enough to activate it.

  • It's possible to survive. True Vanguard demonstrates this in his No Backup Plans video: http://youtu.be/LVTPlIDO-qM And no, Victory isn't certain no matter what Super you're using, but with map knowledge and enough practice you can stack the odds in your favor as a WoL Defender.
