I've noticed the same thing, but I think that's because real people generally have bigger heads than fictional characters. Additionally, real helmets need about 1-2 inches of depth between the surface of your real head and the surface of the helmet, whereas fictional characters somehow manage to squeeze their heads into helmets that don't ever leave room for their nose.
