Well the U is redundant. Just like having two "K's" right next to eachother. Or even a CK in a word.

One could argue that any silent letter is redundant. Doesn't make the spelling incorrect.

But for "favorite" and "color" etc there is a U that is un necessary. They would both have the same meaning though. Like knight and night. Idiots. So sick of the flood bring stupid.
