Shin Malphur. Jaren was killed by Dredgen Yor when Shin was his 'apprentice'.
If I remember correctly Jaren saved a group of people from a village outside of the city from a tyrannical leader. Shin was one of them. He became a Hunter and tracked down Dredgen for revenge.
