You forgot to include the largest lobbying groups that are against legalization....law enforcement & prison employees. They are afraid of losing jobs & income from non violent minor drug offenders......they seem to be more than happy to incarcerate innocent citizens for years....don't really care about ruining people's lives as long as they can keep getting paid every week.

  • Yeah...I mean I never said that there weren't law enforcement groups on the right side of the issue, it is very much a minority though .......and my statement about the lobbying organizations is still true.

  • Absolutely true, big pharmacy, private prisons, alcohol and more all play a role

  • Oh yeah....it's pretty sad that all their stances all have to do with morality & protecting the public, when it is so very obviously only about money.

  • I've got over 24 years in county corrections and I'm all for legalization. Quite a few law enforcement agencies have openly said they're all for legalization as well. It's the federal government and their stranglehold on funding that keeps feeding this bullshit among other factors. I've worked in booking for most of my career. I'll tell you straight up I'd rather deal with a stoner over a drunk any day of the week. It's a travesty of justice that one is legal and the other isn't.

  • Oh yeah....I know there are definately some law enforcement groups & certainly individuals that are on the right side of this issue. It's still true though that the law enforcement & prison employee lobbying groups are a couple of the largest organizations that are pumping money into the fight against legilizaton.

  • I haven't seen anything on that. The only exception would be privatized prisons, which should be outlawed. There was one case I saw where a judge was getting kickbacks from a corporation for handing out long sentences. I think he got a lot of time himself. I honestly feel like non violent/victimless crimes could be handled in much better or creative ways. I've seen a lot in my time and there is just so much that just doesn't make sense.

  • Right the real son of the country. Making a profit off of locking up non violent people. Obama just pardoned a guy in Missouri serving life for smoking some weed.

  • Yeah it's so unbelievably -blam!-ed up that Prison has become a for-profit industry, guaranteeing a profit motive in perpetuating the status quo no matter how many lives are destroyed in the process. It is profoundly corrupt and evil, and I feel like we're living in a dystopian nightmare as a result of something like that existing.

  • Yes....the whole system is about nothing but money anymore.... If you are rich enough, you can get away with almost anything just by hiring the most expensive lawyers & paying off the right people.... The justice system in this country has become so corrupt, it's just shameful really.

  • Disgusting more like. Makes me want to throw up, and also punch whoever is responsible for this travesty in the face. Repeatedly.

  • Yep...would be nice if there was a person or something like that to be responsible for it.......but the greed and corruption is evident all the way from the local police up to our elected officials. There just is no easy solution to any of this....legalizing marijuana & releasing people in jail for minor possession offences would be a good step in the right direction tho.

  • Unfortunately yes.....it is much more about being a source of income than the rehabilitation of our citizens.

  • Ya...being Latin American I feel that our countries look up to you guys for guidance, and I believe you guys do a lot of things right being a world super power and all. But letting the government make prisons systems a business is just plain fuked up.

  • If we didn't have our drug wars your countries would be drastically different today. Drastically different as in they would probably be paradises.

  • Sad stuff indeed. Good thing there's people that realize this, hope is not lost totally as long as there's people that worry about more than their own self.
