Why is it that i can't just buy ONLY the taken king off the XBL store. Does not owning the other expansions have something to do with it? Because it will let me buy the bundles that include year 1 expansions but I can't buy TTK by itself

yes you need the other DLC to buy Taken King. So you should just buy the "bundle" for like $70
