Not sure then. Sounds like I have the same setup as your nephew. For me, after the 18 Gb installation (that took three attempts on my GEN 1 PS3 but only once on my GEN 2/3) and after launch date I attempted to launch a TTK mission. When I when to click on it I received the "you must own the Taken King". I quit the game, went to the PSN store through the console, went to downloads, manually downloaded the last purchase (Legendary Taken King 100KB) TTK. After the bread download I relaunched the game, went to the mission and was able to launch the mission (at this point I had TTK).
