Using two controllers on the same console works. I signed in under my profile, which I used to purchase the Taken King, and then logged my son in with the second controller. We launched the game under his profile and now he can play.

Wow, thanks. I tried this and it worked great. I was pretty upset when my son called me at work and told me he couldn't access the Taken King material after I had spent several hours playing it on my gamertag the moment it came out. Hope they publicize the fix loud enough so others having the same problem can get it sorted out. Thanks again.
