Haven't attempted it yet, but I found a cheese spot on YouTube that looks like you barely get hit at all. I feel like if you mow them down to under 10% health and then go for the shotgun last hit it should be fine.

I'm about to do that quest once I get high enough level. So do you have to solo it? If not, what if someone kills the boss before you do?

There is matchmaking for it but we went in with a team

Its best to do it with friends who are up to the same step. We just smapped him with shotguns once he came close to dying
