The thing is, there's a fine line between supporting and enabling. They steal a little money from you? Sure, let them know if they need anything, food, a place to stay, whatever, you have their back. But once they've gotten to the point where they're stealing expensive items from their loved ones, they're only a step away from outright burglary. And THAT can land them some serious time, or worse if they break into the wrong house.
So yes. At that point it's best to get the police involved. If he gets jail time, he won't be in long. And the Judge and DAs office are far more likely to give him a deal that would send him to rehab and put him on probation than to actually lock him up. Especially with the family's backing.
