You must be new to the MMO thing. And I personally think the new infusion system has added way more customization than ever before. Any purple gear can be the highest light level, ANY of it. And the armor has a whole list of new perks it can roll with.
The raid is less skill based than the other two..? You must've never done the new raid or never done the last two. If your team doesn't know what to do, you aren't downing oryx, or any boss, any time soon.
The leaving behind of Year 1 weapons was made to rebalance Trials and Iron Banner. No more Dark Below Felwinter's with amazing rolls anymore.
