There aren't customers anymore, and people no longer even [i]listen[/i] to music - they consume music, as the marketeers started referring to it I loathe the word and I loathe the massively [i]increased[/i] power and dominance of marketing and PR in business, in controlling the creative industries, and in the shaping of public opinion in politics to benefit the narrow interests of those in power Which is why it's odd to hear ordinary people adopt cold, and ultimately transient, marketing terms In the book, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the Golgafrinchams put all the most useless people on their planet on spaceships and blasted them into space - this included all the marketing people :)

What? You literally went on this mini rant for no reason. Consume isn't really a buzz word. It's just any other common word. I am a consumer and I consume products. Why be so butt hurt about? And thank for the pointless hitchhikers reference :-)

Woh, I'm not in a rant - that implies a somewhat aggressive manner, or at least your reaction seems you've taken it that way. I guess it's just the way text appears when you can't see or hear the person talking. It's just a word that has garnered popularity because it's a good word. What better word is there to describe a customer? Words like "consume" can't even be buzz words. It elicits no emotion or reaction. It's just a common word used in the marketing and business industry, not to money off of people, but instead because it's one of the first words you learn when you go into that business.

When it comes to words and language, 7 years is a very long time. That coupled with the fact that it's supposedly a buzz word, a word that's supposed to elicit emotions and it a reaction from someone. It's hard to imagine something can remain a buzz word for more than 2 years... So yeah, I'd say it is a very long time. And yes I am quite young, 16 to be exact.
