I think that the darkness is actually good and the traveler, ghosts, and speaker are bad and the guardians have been blindly been following them this whole time. An interesting thing to note is that on the praedyth mission where you can glitch into the area to get his ghost, I think that praedyths ghost might be the only good ghost out there and will start to reveal things to us about the darkness that we didn't know
