Kill La Kill or a Gundam show
If you want to see where mecha anime came from, go with Gundam
If you want to see some insane action then go with KLK. It really has a phenomenal story to boot. Sadly the first part is marred by some cringe-worthy fanservice which makes people hate it straight-off. If you can get past that, then you'll really enjoy it.
