From my take, light is a lie. Or, darkness is a lie. Oryx stated that when he ate the gift mast, he felt a sense of light and duty. This leads me to belive that guardian's light is an illusion, forced by the traveler.

Note that the darkness makes you a total slave to your "purpose" (and the immortality just a con) and I'm not sure wether the light is free will or just a slave to stamping out darkness.
