Mara Sov is or may have been Taox
So my theory is this Mara Sov is or may have been Taox.
To Begin: This is how The Taken King opening cinematic looked to me the first time I saw it.

Taox Sterile Mother: The mothers I believe were the original/proto wizards, longer lived than most of their species, and maybe some powers.
Taox betrays the royal family but does so to protect the people from their follies. She does so in grief and I believe with more than a little self-disgust but will do so for the greater good. Yes she does ask to be made regent but I don’t get the sense this was just a greedy power play. I think she did not want outsiders to rule over her people, her children.
When the three Sisters return they conquer Fundament and then the Ammonites, The Dakaua, and finally the Ecumene.
Taox like the Traveler ran from the Hive/Darkness keeping one step ahead until she came to the Sol system. She was there when the Traveler sacrificed itself to save humanity. Somewhere between Mars and Jupiter running humans and Taox are all caught up in the event and she is reborn Awoken.
The Awoken of the reef lived a hidden and secretive existence until they came out to attack The House of Wolves. I think Mara did this less to save The City but to repay a debt to her old traveling companion The Traveler. So like The Traveler she decided to not run this time when Oryx came she would fight to protect her new people the Awoken. She knew it would come down to this since Aurash went down the pit to the worm, when Auryx returned corrupted, and Oryx became king.
So that’s my theory take it or leave it.
Bye the way Eris has a worm of her own now eating her light from the inside.

Well, Traveller didn't had choice, he wanted to escape when he knew that hive and fallen where near him. The one who stopped him from escaping was Rasputin, the warmind, so it wasn't a his own choice the thing to stay near guardians and earth.

Problem is Proto-Hive had 2 arms, 2 legs and 3 eyes, more likely she could be, if not from those early races Oryx vanished, a survivor from one of his conquers, she is awoken and nothing more.

1 ReplyIf this is true and Mara is technically Toax then what made her change appearances to an awoken? Did she even have the power to change her appearance? As far as I know the awoken were changed from human to awoken because of an event that happened to the humans abandoning Earth. Also she has a brother Prince Uldren (If he is a legit brother). Which Toax never refereed to having in the BoS. Also I believe Eris answears the question of how they knew Oryx's was coming. And that would be due to the whispers of her husk as she said it had stopped whispering to her untill Oryx's entered or solar system.

I've put these pieces together myself as well. After reading through the books of sorrow a few times and rewatching that cutscene it stands to reason that the theory is correct. Also unless Mara was a member of a close alien race she couldn't have known about Aurash decending into the pit. Unless the books of sorrow were read by her ofcourse, but even then, when she says "we've known" it sounds more like she's speaking from a personal or shared experience with Oryx. I don't think there's enough evidence to declare this theory fact but I'm inclined to believe it.

3 RepliesI don't think Taox has spent all of these millenia hiding just to confront Oryx openly in a battle she can't win. Also, I believe Rasputin prevented the Traveler from leaving. The Traveler didn't sacrifice itself for us.

To be born as an awoken means to go from human-> awoken Scars = memories (speculation of course, scars are used as a metaphor for memories in a number of literary works) Human lifespan tripled, I wouldn't be suprised if Mara Sov wasn't just the queen, but the first awoken. She's been at this for a while.

6 RepliesI've heard another theory that's it's not toax, it's in fact savathun. Savathun, thanks to her cunning, has the ability to disguise herself as others. She could've transformed into Mara to make allies in the awoken or into Eris to make allies with the vanguard. Eris more so so she could had the opportunity to kill Crota in order to draw oryx's attention.[spoiler]#illuminaticonfirmed[/spoiler]

1 ReplyI love this theory, though I am a bit skeptical. I think it's more likely that Taox was found by the awoken and gave Mora information about Oryx. Based upon this information I think she made a plan, especially after guardians defeated Crota, to ensure that Oryx could be defeated after he came, for she knew he could come because the Traveler was here.

Idk I don't really buy that but we might see Taox at some point later on. Maybe when Oryx's brother and sister come to our system.

I think Taox is the speaker. Just a theory and have no proof. Just thinking about Eris saying she knows what's under the speakers mask. I also think Eris at the end of the story is speaking to the Hive Queen Oryx's sister.

1 ReplyThe whole beginning speech is Mara talking to Eris, and the entire ending speech is Eris responding to Mara. The whole "crawled out of that pit" bit is an obvious reference to Eris escaping the hive tunnels on the moon.

Pretty sure oryx got a hold of taox when they destroyed the ecumene. Also the OG hive have a very short life span and don't look much different from what they do at the minute, they're also from another system altogether. The awoken are descended from humans.
