They feel like the Darkness can't be defeated, so they want to build a massive "cult" and flee. The more people they have, the better chance they can successfully colonize elsewhere. The only problem with that is the Darkness came from outside the solar system, and if they flee; they may just end up dying to the Darkness anyway.
