First of all, I didn't come up with this, someone else did and I am just spreading the word because it's still an issue for some people.
SO you keep going to Court of Oryx hoping you will meet other guardians who may help with your runes but keep hitting a ghost town? There is a trick: Every time you board the Dreadnought and head right to Hall of Souls (where Court of Oryx is), as soon as you hit the "transition area" (the pathway connecting The Breach and Hall of Souls), walk through that pathway really slowly until you reach Hall of Souls.
There is a matchmaking system between every location, not just when you launch the patrol. The reason for not being able to see anyone in CoO is that the transition area is too small and if you sprint through it, the matchmaking system will fail to match you with other guardians. If you walk through the pathway slowly, the game will have enough time to match you with others.
I've had the same issue at the beginning but after I started using this trick, I have always met bunch of people in CoO.
Please bump and like this so others can see it. I think this is a really helpful trick.
TL;DR: If you can't meet anyone in Court of Oryx, walk through the pathway connecting The Breach and Hall of Souls slowly so the game has enough time for matchmaking to finish.
Edit: Thanks for all the positive feedback. This trick works on any Dreadnought locations and you can use it both ways - meaning that if you DO want to be alone in a location, sprint through the transition zone and there is a high chance you will end up alone. Good for Hadium Flakes farming in The Mausoleum for example.
Also, this will work on the planets, not just Dreadnought. But it's generally not an issue there because the transition zones are big enough to allow matchmaking to finish (except Earth - Rocket Yard).

I'd love to find some way to solo matchmaking strikes so I can get certain quests/bounties.

Sounds like a good trick for Rocketyard, like the guy below me said. CoO you can just solo it, can't you?

Edited by Achomaniac: 10/13/2015 12:41:16 AMI wish Bungie would just add a "change instance" button somewhere in the UI. I've played other online games where you can change between separate "instances" of any given zone in the game. If a zone you're in is empty and you want company, or someone in your current zone is trolling you, just change zones without having to go through two loading screens or having to run all the way back through the adjacent zones. Don't know if it would work in Destiny but it would help out a lot.

This worked for me like a champ! Thanks for the tip!

Best. Advice. Ever.

Nice one, have a star

Every time I'm in there, there's like 7-9 people. The problem is never people, but too many people trying to activate their own runes.
-
Cool tip
-
Bump!!!

Appreciate the help for others but, I have to master soloing them since my router isn't that good it can't handle an open nat and it can't handle matchmaking.

Best plan... when you find someone start a party. Then have both of you create your own fireteam. Now you can have a bunch of people all communicating. We got 6 together one time. You can also use the forums.
