The reason is obvious. In order for new content to be relevant, the old content has to become somewhat irrelevant, otherwise there will be no interest in exploring the new content; hence no motivation to invest any time or energy into the new content. This is a loot based game. Half the fun is getting new, and better loot. Take Fatebringer for example (arguably one of, if not the most popular PVE hand cannons prior to TTK). Say you could ascend Fatebringer to 310 Attack. The only way to make a [i]new[/i] hand cannon worth working for would be to make one that is more powerful than Fatebringer, and since Fatebringer can be ascended to the same respective Attack, the only way to make a more powerful hand cannon would be to give it better stats/perks/mag size, since the respective Attack stats would be equal. Let’s call this new hand cannon "Ass Kicker" for the sake of discussion. Now, Fatebringer was already insane enough as it is, and now you've got an [i]even more[/i] powerful hand cannon: Ass Kicker. Can you imagine how OP it would be? Then imagine year 3; how are you going to introduce a successor to Ass Kicker, when it too can be ascended to the new Attack cap? Well, of course, the only way would be to, again, introduce a hand cannon with more powerful stats/perks/mag size than Ass Kicker, otherwise you’ll just keep using Ass Kicker, won’t you? Why would you bother getting a new hand cannon if it isn’t any better (or more relevant) than your Ass Kicker? Why would you care about the new content if there wasn't any new weapons/armour/loot that wasn't worth getting, or in other words, any better than the stuff you already had? Half the fun would be lost. Again, this is a loot based game, folks. If Bungie allowed us to ascend everything in existence, at what point/year would the newest “bestest” hand cannon need to have full ROF, full impact, full range, full stability, full reload, 50 mag size, and insanely OP perks, just to tip it over the relevance of it's predecessor? At what point does it become ridiculous, and contradictory? Bungie would end up having to progressively boost the stats and perks of new weapons to a stupidly powerful point/brick wall, just so you can keep their predecessors relevant in terms of Attack damage, when the predecessors are just going to be abandoned for their successors anyway, because they will have inferior stats/perks/mag size, making the whole exercise of ascending them redundant anyway. Is it making sense now? Can you see the pointlessness in trying to hold onto Y1 content? Do you see the logical flaw? Can you see the conundrum? Extrapolate the same logic into every other weapon that was considered to be one of, if not the best of its class. Again, the only way to make the new content relevant is to make the old content irrelevant, and in Destiny, what's relevant is the attack/defence, weapon mag size, weapon/armour stats, and the perks. Bungie had to choose how to make Y2 weapons/armour more relevant than Y1, and they chose to leave Y1 behind by preventing them from being ascended to the new attack/defence cap. This was probably the smartest way to go because it keeps the game play style relatively similar, and it doesn’t depend on having to constantly introduce weapons/armour with better stats and perks, which would inevitably result in weapons/armour that would be stupidly OP and that would inevitably hit a brick wall where it would just become impossible to make more relevant weapons and armour, whilst also allowing your Y1 stuff to still be relevant in Crucible. There is really no arguing with this. There is no way around it. The old content has to be left behind to make way for the new content. Bungie executed it in a way that is pretty reasonable and at least keeps your Y1 stuff relevant in PVP. As for the nerfing of some weapons, in some cases I think it was necessary, like Thorn and TLR, they [i]were[/i] a bit OP, certainly in effective range at least. And that's coming from me who predominately used those weapons. I loved them just as much as anyone. I don't think Ghorn needed nerfing, but it ultimately doesn't matter anyway since it was a predominately PVE weapon and it's been left behind. That sort of sucks but then again, why would I bother exploring new rocket launchers if Ghorn was still relevant in PVE? I wouldn't bother. Look what happened when HoW dropped. What was the first thing everyone ascended? Ghorn, so they could burn Skolas. It would be nice if the one exception was you could ascend Y1 class items since class item perks are relatively trivial and the trend with class items has usually been you choose them based on personal taste.

  • I simply dont agree with that mentality. Bungie is/will lose so many more players by "thinking" for us instead of letting us use what we earn until WE feel like something comes along better than what we already have. Its flat out lazy game design on Bungies part to force players into using items we dont want to use or even more frustrating, make us use uncommon/rare items that surpass legendary/exotic weapons and armor we earned by mind numbing grinds

  • The one thing I need you to stop with, is referencing the nerfs. They are honestly neigh un-noticeable in most cases, hand cannons the exception there because tlw is actually fair now... But gally ascended would still be the God of RL

I was wondering how Bungie would approach this; I was wondering how they would keep players interested with new loot, given the game is heavily loot driven, and given so many players already have most of the loot: would they make new loot better than the old, or make new loot of relative quality to the old, and leave the old behind? It seems they went with the latter, and it makes some sense, as it keeps a lot of weapons still relevant in PVP, but you can't just blaze through PVE like a God with maxed out Exotic's like you could in HoW. It's actually going to take time and effort for many players to reach max level, unlike HoW where everyone pretty much reached 34 in a week, if not in a day. [quote]Let me direct you to HoW. Everyone that I knew, and every video I saw of Skolas completion, was using Gjallarhorn to burn him in 30 seconds or less to avoid the difficulty of the mechanics in that match. It was such a thing that Bungie changed the match to include more formidable ads, as well as alternate his burn ever week. There was no shortage of "first Skolas kill" videos where everyone was using Gjallarhorn. Most PoE matches I was seeing Gjallarhorn and Fatebringers coming out at one point or another. Ghorn was easily still the best rocket launcher, and it was undoubtedly one of the first things anyone would of buffed up with an exotic shard. I could include a crap-load of YouTube links to prove the point but I don’t think that’s necessary. Hardly anyone was using new gear from HoW, apart from some new Exotic armour, most of which everyone managed to get in the first few weeks through Exotic engrams. I wasn’t arguing that Y1 was OP. My point was that Year 1 included a lot of stuff that was pretty great as it is, that would have to become irrelevant one way or another, whether by being nerfed and or prohibited from reaching max level, or whatever, because otherwise, you’d have to make new weapons that are even better than Year 1’s, and it would get ridiculous. Either way, the point remains that in order for new stuff to be relevant, the old stuff has to be left behind. Furthermore, [i]obviously[/i], bungie didn't want people blazing through the new content with stuff equally as good as all the new top tier gear. Obviously. When HoW dropped, people were getting to max level in a day. With TTK, there's hardly anyone max level even after a month. They've made it harder this time. That's a good thing. I got bored of HoW very quickly. There was zero motivation for me to complete Skolas because I had everything already, and none of his loot table had anything better than I already had. It wasn’t worth completing every week. Whereas with TTK, I can already see myself looking forward to raiding again on reset every week. There’s still so much new loot to get. TTK has way more playability than HoW, not just because King's Fall is more interesting than PoE (at least in my opinion), but because they have rendered a lot of our old gear irrelevant, and so for the first time in a while, there's actually a motive to bother with it, there's actually a new goal and it's not easy to reach it. HoW was too easy.

Gjally was immensely overused, and definitely took away from the purity of a lot of the HoW endgame. However, [i]in general[/i], I still stand by my statement that gear diversity in HoW was at an all-time high, across [i]all[/i] gamemodes, in not in the PoE. Despite my general love for most of what HoW brought to the table, the effort to get to 34 was abysmally minimal. If [i]anything[/i], I think the one thing I can fully get behind in TTK is the effort it takes to get to max level; it doesn't seem quite as brutal as Vanilla was, but it still makes max levels feel like an [i]achievement.[/i]

  • Definitely agree with you that weapon diversity was higher in HoW. And man, I miss my weapons too. Fatebringer was my go to primary for PVE and I was uber accustomed to it. But at the same time, I'm enjoying TTK a lot more than HoW. I like that I need to update all my gear; I can see the logic in this direction.

  • I just think that TTK would have perfected what HoW [i]wanted[/i] to be, if it had simply included Year 1 in the Infusion system. It would retain the positives from HoW (like gear diversity, and activity relevance), but would remove most of the negative aspects (by nerfing OP gear like Gjally, and making the level cap more respectable). Again, I'm not saying I don't want to use [i]new[/i] weapons, but HoW proved (in my opinion) that players [i]do not[/i] need to be forced to move on in order to experience new content. And, thanks to all the 2.0 patches/nerfs, I think that would be ever MORE true in the TTK Meta, since weapons like Gjally no longer break the system like they did before, if that makes sense. :P Even if Infusing Year 1 gear took 2-3x more effort than Year 2, I still think it'd be worth it, because even if you don't care about the [i]gear[/i], it seems like a massive shame to leave all those [i]activities[/i] behind. XC

    Don't people use Imago Loop because Fatebringer is capped and Imago Loop is at year 2 levels? If Fatebringer were still as strong as it was, I suspect the vast majority would go with it, rather than Imago Loop as you'd have to wait for a good roll anyway

  • You might be right, but I still think a lot of people (myself included) would still be really interested in it just for a change of pace. It could very easily be the better PvP choice (FB's perks aren't exectly fantastic for Crucible), and any roll with Firefly would be pretty much Fatbringer 2.0 for the PvE fans.

  • I really think you are the only one upset about the loss of y1 weapons that would try something for a change of pace. Most of them just don't like change and want their thorn for Pvp, gally for pve... You I think just miss your collection and strats behind the guns, which I respect, but I am on the other side of opinion. At this point I am half in the bag at 3:50 am and need to get off these forums, good food for thought guys there was actually some intelligent debate here

  • Yeah I agree a lot of people would probably try it regardless of caps on year 1. But I think the lesser weapons should be considered also. I mean, if I were Bungie, I really wouldn't bother making all these uncommon/rare weapons if people would not bother playing with them (if the cap didn't exist). I may not like the decision, but I kind of understand how they want people to use the year 2 equipment. For me personally, some of those year 1 rare weapons were more interesting than some of the legendaries, which is unfortunate.

    Why not bring our year 1 to 280? (via infusion so you still needed new weapons) This way we could of transitioned to 310 weapons but if we really wanted to keep using the fate then you could do so with a penalty. I got gjallarhorn from Xur a few weeks before it was destroyed because rng decided I wasn't allowed to play with it...never even bothered to level it up... I don't mind leaving them behind but it was a giant fvck you, 170, dismantle away....

    BTW, I feel the pain. Man, it sucks ass that all my old gear is mostly useless to me now. Certainly missing Fatebringer, and don't even get me started on missing TLW; I agree that it needed a range nerf, it was a bit ridiculous; you could pretty much snipe people with it. I feel like it could be a bit more powerful and accurate aiming down the sights at close-mid range though. I get that it's supposed to be a hip-fire weapon but I dunno, it feels pretty useless otherwise. It would be nice if it was still functional down the sights.

    Agree with you and have argued the same, except that I believe there was room to ascend Raid exotics, as there were only the five of them and they are the trophy items of the year one PvE experience.

    Yeah, I can dig that. I'm holding on to all my exotics and a few choice Legendary's. I'm wagering Bungie will make them relevant again once all the new content has been exhaustingly explored. If those exotics were relevant now, it would probably be too easy to blaze through the new content. My guess is they didn't want to make it too easy.

  • Another good point. And they've already introduced the Glass Needles for rerolling secondary perks on exotic Armor - a good compromise with the requests to reroll armor. Now if they'll just add an item to infuse Raid exotics…

    I was about to say something similar, but unless I missed something you've set out the argument pretty good there. I don't think they'd make the old weapons permanently relevant. Although that'd be nice, there's always new content coming out, which would make current gear obsolete and etc. Though when year 2 goes obsolete, they'd presumably be the same as year 1. Maybe they could have a "Legacy Day" or something like once a month when old weapons regain their old stats for a day for old times sake?

    That's a bloody great idea. Legacy Day where all Legendary's/Exotics weapons are at the highest cap. You should post a thread about that (assuming someone else hasn't already).

    Probably, yep. I'm so happy they've introduced Glass Needles. For ages I've wanted to be able to roll the perfect armour set, especially for Crucible.
