A rifle that shoots a pistol round in semi auto or full auto mode is a subcompact
Thats DOD classification
Exceptions being;
Tube loaded lever or pump action
Magnum and revolver rifles
Bolt action pistol rifles (either the pistol with shoulder stock or extended barrel or both)
The MP5 is a subcompact machine pistol
The MAC-10 is a subcompact Thompson platform that can be fired as pistol or have the included parts to convert to a rifle.
The G3 or C3 is the rifle round version of the MP5 platform and the actual semi auto rifle of that platform.
The P90 is a subcompact that fires the 5.7 caliber round.

I didnt make the terms guy the US department of defense did. I do agree its a lil oxy moronic; But its a term to denote the fact the weapon is; A pistol round weapon system A semi auto or full auto next generation gas powered piston or hydraulic driven bolt weapon system. And have that info in one word.
