What's the plot of Destiny then? That you're a Guardian and you fight the Darkness? That's not a plot, that's just setting. Destiny needs more story. Without it the feeling of progression is so shallow. Yes, you get better guns and armor, but the enemies get harder too, so relatively you don't progress at all. Progression comes from story. Right now Guardians are some sort of enigma. There's no NPC worth comparing yourself to. Imagine if there were NPC guardians that actually did shit. Like a mission where you become surrounded at the end, and then a legendary guardian swoops in and saves your ass. Suddenly you wouldn't be the most bad-ass thing in the Universe and you'd have something to progress towards. Or imagine if the enemies actually had story. Imagine you encountered the main villain more than just once. Say they kick your butt the first time around, but then you finally defeat them in the raid. That's progression.

 • You seem to be confused on what setting actually means. Setting, in the literary sense is the time and location a story takes place. So the setting is the future on earth, Mars etc. And as far everything else you said, that is all opinion. An opinion that I do not share. My game experience would not be improved by any of your examples. And that is my opinion. So back to my original point, story isn't for everyone. Destiny "needing" story is a moot point.
