I thought the Traveler wanted to leave but Rasputin crippled it to make it stay and defend us by making ghosts and therefore guardians

This is my understanding as well.

Both are possible. The Traveler could have prepared us, seen that we weren't going to make it, decided to cut and run to try again, only to have Rasputin go CARRHAE WHITE on her.
