The traveler's only goal is self preservation. Not to protect humanity, hence why Rasputin shot it down when it tried to leave us, like it did with the fallen.

Except he didn't lmao. Never does it say Rasputin actually attacked the traveller only that that was a contingency plan. If you read the dreams of alpha lupi cards you'll know the travelled willingly stayed and chose earth for its final stand

It's a combo of both The traveler is constantly seeking the one civilization that will be strong enough to finally overcome the darkness but as of yet all the ones it has found have been too weak so it was forced to abandon them in order to keep "the mission" alive
