Cayde and the stranger

Kalos was my friend at first. He was a Warlock and I a Hunter. Both of us were loners and we unsurprisingly met the other wandering in the wilderness. We decided to stick together since it meant if one of us died, at least one other person would know it. Out in the wild we saw the others power first hand. He would toss an orb of destruction here while I cut through foes there. We were always showing up the other, yet there was something about those orbs I could never beat. Days became weeks, weeks became months Months become years. We became something else as we slew our dark enemies. Guardians are discouraged from relationships, we must put the city first, not others. And yet I grew to love him and he grew to love me. For a long time we both had someone, after so many years of ourselves and ghosts. I remember everything about the day he fell. The Vex, in all their fury, had surrounded us. The Venusian swamp grew dense with ozone as lasers arced through the marsh and bullets flew. He gave almost all he had into his last super. His void split in the air and fell all around us. The Vex disintegrated into nothingness, but not all of them. A Minotaur, half destroyed, lunged out nowhere and spears his chest. With a flick his palm he sent it back to oblivion, but the damage was done. I rushed to his side. His light was fading fast. In his palm a flicker of void remained. He held it up. "Take it, quick, before it winks out" He never breathed again. I cradled him in my arms. My friend, my heart, my companion, had slipped away. But his light was still there. It was a spark, but a spark is enough. The Vex were still coming. I took his void with my hands. Now I could see what I had been missing, the beauty of the void I could not capture with fire or arc. I pulled back from the nothingness. A lance of void came out. I took aim at the Vex. Their remnants cackled and sparked with electricity. With the memory of Kalos behind me, I let loose the power of the void for the first time. Needless to say, I survived that day. All thanks to Kalos. He said something, before that last stand of ours. Something I think should be remembered. "Never be alone"
