With the release and completion of the Hard Mode King's Fall Raid showed that elemental legendary primaries weren't being carried through to The Taken King, which appears to be felt by some in the community as a disappointment.
In a post on NeoGAF, Luke Smith said the following:
No. Elemental primaries are being left behind. They had the distinct and undesirable property of limiting a broad weapon sandbox to a few weapons.
You're free to disagree, but I strongly prefer the breadth of arsenal options, the potential of finding a better Legendary than you have to being stuck because of a damage color.
Additionally, no Legendary weapons with damage colors has the property of making secondaries and heavies more important because of their damage color.
Why are the lack of elemental primaries disappointing? These guns proved very helpful in PVE activities throughout Destiny, having a primary weapon that can effectively deal with certain enemy shields and especially handy for Nightfall activities.
I do agree with Luke Smith on one aspect, having a select few legendary primaries that possess elemental damage does reduce the variety of primary weapons that can be used. However, what if you could make any primary you please have an elemental damage? Let's look at Year 1 activities; VoG and CE are mainly used for Glimmer or Motes of Light, while Prison of Elders is used for Motes and Strange Coins. Etheric Light and the weapons that drop are useless in Year 2 right now. What if we had a different option of infusion and bring relevance back to these Year 1 End Game activities?
What if we can take a Year 1 PoE/Raid primary, an increased amount of materials from a regular infusion (20 Legendary Marks, 50 Weapon Parts, however much Glimmer) along with adding 20 Etheric Light, to be able to infuse a damage type onto a Year 2 primary?
You add replay ability to Year 1 activities, you allow people to create elemental primaries and you don't restrict the number of Year 2 legendary primaries that are used.
TLDR; Let us use Year 1 legendary primary weapons, Etheric Light and weapon infusion materials to put elemental damage on Year 2 legendary primary weapons.
