So, what is the correct one? People are using both, which side are you on?
EDIT: I was thinking.. LMG --> Legendary Machine Gun? Hmm? Think about that.. (Nah)
EDIT2: Some lively debates are taking place, but what are your thoughts? 45 replies and going strong!
EDIT3: Aaaaand we're trending! Keep the discussion going and maybe we'll get to a conclusion
EDIT4: I think we can safely say the heavy weapon slot contains light machine guns. Still alot of people choose to say HMG tho
-
I am always temped to call it HMG myself but I understand and agree with people calling it LMG
-
-
I just say "MG" myself.
-
I think what we carry is hmg because thunderlord and crucible mg. To people say we can't carry hmg, remember this is destiny and this take place 700 years ahead

Technically what guardians use would be considered a GPMG or MMG. These guns typically aren't meant to be operated by one person, but rather a two person team. They are also incredibly impractical to fire from a standing or kneeling pose. An LMG would be something smaller than what the guardians use, such as a SAW. Like a magazine fed minimi would be a good example of a LMG.

Edited by PROCK7: 10/24/2015 9:35:19 PMOk I cringed when I read you wrote LMG is LEGENDARY Machine Gun. LMG is Light Machine Gun which are those that are man portable aka a single person can carry and fire it. Classic LMG in real world is the M60 which was often used in Rambo movies. In today's US military the M60 is now replaced by the M240B. To be honest though you could stand and fire it, the recoil would make it way too difficult to hit anything which is why they are fired from a prone position or a tripod. HMG is Heavy Machine Gun which are mounted and not able to be carried and fired by a single person. Classic MG is the 50 caliber or even the 30 Caliber which are usually mounted on a vehicle like a truck or tank in movies. Another is the Vulcan cannon aka Gatling Gun which is the 6 barreled weapon in terminator 2 and predator 1. The weight of the weapon, recoil and the weight of anmo makes it impractical to carry. Edit: The "heavy" weapons used in Destiny are LMG.

I think a LMG is something that can be carried and utilized by infantry(historically a machine gun squad, who had different roles and carried different pieces or ammo) whether held or mounted, whereas a HMG is larger and more likely mounted or fixed and less practical for a squad of soldiers to even deploy..... But I dunno.
-
How on earth is this even a conversation?...we have the bloody internet for crying out loud if you need to look something up. They are LMG's. People fail to understand what a "Machine Gun" is and confuse HMG and LMG. Here's the short version.. A "machine gun" was originally designed/created as a HUGE f*¢%¡*g weapon, designed to mow down large groups of attacking soldiers.... originating sometime between the civil American war and the first world war..it was like 6 feet long attached to two giant wagon wheels. And it had to be carried by vehicle and it was manned by at least 4 men to even use it. .. this was refered to as a "Machine Gun". many years later when they had fine tuned the mechanics and had made the gun much smaller..able to be manned and operated by a single operative... they gave these weapons the moniker of "Light Machine Gun"...or LMG..because of his much smaller they were to there counterparts.. however these weapons, while able to do well against infantry, don't hold up as well against vehicles or other heavy infantry...so there are separately made machine guns for different purposes... In short... If a single soldier can operate it and fire the weapon, standing...a la Rambo (which is bull considering the amount of recoil, an LMG is meant to be fired in a seated or tri pod position, F.Y.I.)... then it is considered a small machine or LMG ...if it is mounted to a vehicle or large tri pod and requires several operator's to use it, then this is considered a normal sized machine gun....it is usually just called a Machine Gun.....it is only given the moniker of Heavy Machine Gun or HMG ... when they are being used in conjunction with it's smaller cousin the LMG so as not to be confused when issuing to soldiers, etc.. Sweet mother of pearl... please stop calling them heavy machine guns!

Edited by Talonia_: 10/25/2015 6:32:30 AMLmg is a portable machine gun that is used for infantry Hmg is stationary or mounted weapon usually loaded with armour piercing rounds and are ment to be used on Vehicles
-
LMG since we carry it.
-
It's both you moron, light machine guns have a higher rate of fire and heavy machine guns have high impact but shoot slower.
-
It's neither. They're just called machine guns. But they go in the heavy weapon slot so I'm OK with "HMG" even though that usually refers to a mounted weapon.
-
As far as destiny goes I call the high rate of fire low impact ones LMG as they do light damage per shot and the low fire high impact ones HMG because they do high damage per shot. I'm aware this isn't technically correct in terms of what a LMG and HMG are in the real world but in destiny it makes sense to me and allows differentiation between 2 separate classes of weapon.
-
From a real world stand point: A LMG, or light machine gun, is man portable and can be fired by a single person carrying it. A HMG, or heavy machine gun, is not man portable and is mounted to a vehicle or stronghold. My credentials: 6yrs Army
-
I just call it a machine gun
-
I say HMG Because it's a Heavy weapon
-
Edited by MysticalSnurtle: 10/25/2015 7:12:35 AMLight machine guns are out of the question. Medium machine guns seem pretty accurate. Some of the heavy guns we get are huge, those are def. Heavy machine guns. btw just compare the heavy machine guns that the Chief carries compared to some of our machine guns. In some cases our guns are even bigger than the one he lugs around. EDIT: I can see what you guys are saying now. Guardians do not wield heavy machine guns. What they do have seems to be an extremely large light machine gun.
-
An lmg is something that you can run around with, and in this game uses purple ammo drops. A great example of a hmg for people that don't understand complex answers but understand destiny, would be one of the turrets from destiny. They can be found in some strikes, missions, and in the crucible game mode combined arms(although I'm not sure it's even in rotation anymore).
-
Lmg or gpmg Hmg would be mounted on vehicles or on a tripod and fire rounds such as .50 cal
-
Light Machine Gun. A HMG would be akin to the weapon that Pikes use.
-
LMG just because I come from a cod background...
-
Pretty sure LMG is the correct term, but I just say Machine Gun. Lot less confusing that way.
-
They're both wrong, let me explain: First heavy machine guns: they usually are stationary, there are ones that can weight more than 30 kilograms, have a great stopping power (which means that they require one shot to kill a normal infantry man). Because of their size and weight they're not practical so they won't be used by us guardians. Then we got light machine guns, these ones have all the mobility and the lightness that the previous ones don't have, but they usually use the same caliber as normal infantry weapons, so they don't have that much stopping power as HMG's do, also they tend to have rate of fires that surpass the 750 rpm to compensate the lack of power, but because of this they get jammed more often and require you to change the barrel almost each 1000~2000 shots fired. Because of this reasons they're no not efficient enough to satisfy the war of the future. So from what I just said if they're not LMG or HMG, what are they? Destiny's machine guns have obviously more impact than our primary weapons and have a lower rate of fire (usually) than 750 rpm, but they're mobile enough to be operated by one single person (in these case, our guardians). My answer is general purpose machine guns, these type of machine guns combine the punch of HMG's and the mobility of the LMG's, also the fit all of the characteristics of the machine guns in destiny, examples of these type of machine gun are the MG42, the M240 (FN MAG), the M60 and the PKP Pecheneg. So there you go, we've been wrk g these whole time and know guardians when know the truth. If you detect any grammar misspelling please comment so I can correct it, English isn't my mother language and I'm still studying it Thanks to everybody that read it till the end.
-
From a military stand point these are LMG. Becuse you carry them , example M-60 was the LMG when i was in, not sure what they use now. HMG would be that turret you place in so e strikes.
-
Under the gun names, it says Machine Gun. Why people say lmg or hmg makes no sense to me. It's straight up, mg.
-
Edited by Randals Shoe Box: 10/25/2015 5:01:29 AMIt is called a heavy machine because it is a heavy weapon and it's a machine gun so hmg.
