Always been that way in Halo... Pretty easy to figure out what weapon they used to kill you though (there's a limited number of weapons available and they're all pretty unique to each other).

Look at the armory in halo 5, around 150 different weapons, they each have different names and have different stats. So yea it says you died by battle rifle, but it doesn't say if it was a longshot battle rifle or a standard one. Get my point?

No, it's literally a battle rifle that has a longer range scope on it and is more stable when fire long distances. There's around 156 different weapons in halo 5.
