I think one of the main things that makes this game seem so limited, other than the fact that they made year one irrelevant, is that there are only three characters and three character slots. But even if you play all three characters, there is no real incentive to play one over the other.
Sure they have their own respective abilities, some of which may seem OP based on opinion, but in the end their abilities are the only thing that make them unique. Most of the armor and weapons, save for most exotic armor, have nothing to do with specific classes. Once a player finds a weapon or piece of armor with good perks, they will most likely copy and paste that same setup to their other characters.
With the Taken King expansion, Bungie introduced the idea of class specific weapons, but no part of those weapons makes them class specific other than Bungie saying they are and locking them to specific classes. A Titan and Warlock can use a sniper just as well as a Hunter if they are good at using snipers.
Imagine if there were 9 different characters, one for each subclass. Imagine how much more we could do with the characters if each subclass had specific armor and weapons. For example, a weapon for the Warlock Solar class that had a perk such as "Getting 3 rapid kills while Radiance is active increases the duration of Radiance". That is just an example, but hopefully you get the point.
Plenty of other MMO's have tons of characters and gear specific to those characters because those characters are specialized to use that gear. Like in Borderlands 2, the Assassin has a sniper perk tree to increase critical damage and other effective uses while using a sniper. Other classes can still use a sniper but if you wanted the most dps on boss, you would want an Assassin that is skilled with snipers.
I am not saying that Destiny should copy all these other MMO's, but it could take some elements from them. Look at how popular games like Borderlands and Skyrim are compared to Destiny. A big reason for this was the variety of gameplay offered by using different characters and classes. The only difference between classes in Destiny is that one class might be a little better at dps or crowd control than the other.
I think if Destiny wants to survive in the future, they should consider things like making classes more useful. This is just my opinion though and I dont expect anyone to agree with it and I would hope that nobody takes offense to this. After all, it is just a game.
