Here's the thing.
Luke Smith was asked about etheric light months ago during the game informer TTK "month" and said it was something they would look at.
While I think bungie has made huge strides in this game with this update/dlc (storytelling, trials bounties implementation, 3oC, quests etc.) the most frustrating thing is a lack of communication and a feeling that anything working for the player that doesn't work how they intended (3oC initially) is fixed incredibly fast, while things that work against us (nightfall rewards, weapon parts) or are gross oversights of omission on their part (etheric light trading) seem to take forever to fix. The problem to fixing this is easy, more communication with the player base about what is going on. The days of "trust us" are gone. That worked in Halo when the problems were small, but this game is a "living" environment with much more layers of complexity to it. As a player base we need to understand it takes longer to fix some things as a result, and bungie needs to understand they need to communicate that with us. I realize the problem with giving people hard dates for things as someone who works in a professional environment. It creates unnecessary stress on employees and the rush to meet a deadline can cause mistakes to be made unnecessarily. As a consumer I want the product to be as close to perfect when I receive it. The frustrating thing is that it feels like we consumers are not being treated as equals with the producers of this content. Tell us WHY there was no etheric light trading, this isn't a parent/child relationship, "because I said so" is not an acceptable answer. We are equals in this. None of us expect you to be perfect bungie, but if you could send us a text telling us you won't make it BEFORE we go to meet you for our date, that would be great.

You hit the nail on the head. They can do whatever they want with this game whenever they want to do it. They have complete and total control over it. The Halloween theme gimmick is proof alone they can make changes as they see fit. The way the game runs is configurable.
