Yes of course they can do what they want with the economy. They are the devs. But this game lives on community interaction and grinding, which means they should do what's best for the community. The community may not always know what should be the next thing they do, but it seems like they don't know either. They won't be saying that if everyone stops playing and activision stops funding them. Hell, Activision bought candy crush and can't give bungie some more money on top of that 500 mil to put in more dedicated servers for pvp
