The actual write speed of the Xbox One HDD is pretty slow.
It uses a SATA 2 connection that maxs out at around 300/MBs if you get a good 7400 RPM External in a USB 3.0 case then it will be over double at around 625/MBs.
I haven't tested this myself but its worth looking into if you are looking to cut down on Download/Install times.
