Berate is a synonym to "criticize" so actually he did use it correctly. I don't think YOU understand how to use it properly.

Actually no, you have to understand the context of the word. Many words are synonymous but cannot be used interchangeably based on the context. To properly use berate, you must not only criticize, but scold. The word is to be used when anger is involved - and one person is directing said criticism directly onto another. Nobody "berates" with an open generalization. Thanks for playing.

Well when you're cursing at someone it could very easily be taken as you scolding them. After all, calm people don't swear at others, but angry people do. You should stop digging yourself a bigger hole, pal.
