They will automatically compare when you highlight them in your inventory. Any stats that are higher will have pluses next to them, any that are lower will have minuses, and stats that are the same won't have anything next to them.

I've been picking out the ones I like and saving them and selling everything else. I modded out a pipe rifle since the ammo is so abundant for them. I also have a 10mm pistol and double barrel shotgun, and a bolt action silenced pipe pistol. Oh and of course the fat man. Everything else I sell, until I get an obviously better choice.

Where do you sell stuff? Or how? All I see is the "drop" option

There are merchants that "barter" with you. There are like six of them in Diamond city. You just sell what you don't want for caps or trade it's your choice.

Not necessarily, since it's an open world kind of game, but I'd start there if you are looking to buy/rid yourself of stuff.
