Really, adding gore, swearing, drugs and sexual themes are the only things to boost the rating. None of those would be necessary to make the story better

But the reason the story is so simple is because thet needed teens to understand it.

I see what you mean, but really, all you need to make a story better is emotion, which can come from some of those things, but it's not a necessity
