The US was winning Vietnam. In the words of Ho Chi Minh, "They had us beat. I don't know why they stopped".

The war was about more than casualties. It was about hearts and minds too, and in that respect, the USA lost catastrophically. Thats why they pulled out.

The US was trying to run the war from the capital rather than letting generals in Vietnam do it. They pulled out of Vietnam because they saw no reason to continue.

They pulled out because they saw the populace turning against them. At least in the north. That was the opposite of what they wanted.
