Pick up everything you can, when you're full, go to sanctuary. Open inventory, drop all scrap that you don't want. Like deathclaw hands, pre-war money ect.. Then open workshop, scrap it all, transfer it to workstation. Highlight anything you run out of, and you'll know when you highlight an item out in the wasteland, if it's made up of something you need.
