That's an interesting assumption that I was only in embassies and tourist attractions. I have been to less developed countries as well. There are usually a handful of people that speak English, but not as many as developed areas. My second language was Japanese, but most choose Spanish, Italian, and French, but not because they are into another language. It's simply because it's required through the education system.
I didn't actually circumvented the language in school by taking a performing arts, then learned Japanese on my own time. Now currently working on Hindi and Tamil.
