Why don't you guys start actually linking the source? You know, the update that it came out of? Afraid that people might realize you're pulling the quote out of context?

So you're argument is they were only talking about exotics... Im not sure if you recall but bungie went on and allowed us to upgrade legendaries when HOW dropped. Did you forget that part while you read through that update thinking they were only talking about exotics?

Did you forget that part while you read through that update thinking they were only talking about exotics?
Where in that quote do they talk about HoW legendaries? That quote was from before TDB. Seriously? Just because they let us upgrade legendaries in HoW doesn't mean some quote they made MONTHS BEFORE HoW somehow magically promises that the changes they make IN THE XPACK AFTER THAT ONE will last for the rest of the game. My point is this. The quote that people are spamming has nothing to do with the vanilla or TDB legendaries. This is obvious from the context of the quote. Just because later on they allowed us to ascend legendaries, doesn't mean that a quote from months before applied to changes they made in a different expansion.

  • They also go on to say they are discussing these issues internally. They were talking about our items as a whole and eventually decided that legendaries and exotics should be upgraded. That update only hurts your argument especially when you look further down the line in HOW.

The quote people are pulling out and using is accompanied by statements that they are going to release legendaries more powerful than the current ones. They clearly and unequivocally say they are going to give us legendaries that are stronger than the current ones. That the old legendaries will be weaker than the new ones. You can't really read that any other way than: the new legendaries will be stronger than the old ones.

True. They are speaking in regards to tdb progression. Now if you read below that you see the op's quote. And below that quote you will see that they are discussing ways to accommodate player progression in the future. Dont give people crap for not reading something fully when you're doing the same thing.

  • I guess here's my point. You want to argue that destiny was not complete at release and had a poor story? I'm right there with you. You want to argue that the grimoire is a poor story telling mechanic and should be in game? I got you. You want to argue that Bungie should allow us to use our favorite legendaries for as long as we want? There are good arguments to be made both ways, and while I don't agree, we can just agree to disagree without either of us being wrong. However, if you want to pull that quote out of context and somehow argue that it's a promise by Bungie that you can use your fatebringer until the end of time, that's just wrong. And worse it's intellectually lazy and dishonest. Argue all you want that we should be able to ascend any gear we want. There are arguments to be made and no one can say that you're wrong. But that quote is being misused and it's silly.

How is it being misused? I went through the process to get bad juju, invective, and all the other y1 exotics that had a bounty required to gain that weapon. I now have to purchase bad juju, and invective and relevel weapons I already had. That's the exact same thing people complained about in tdb. Yes, I would love to upgrade some of my old gear especially my armor. If they want to remove old legendary weapons and not just put forth the effort and nerf them accordingly to y2 then I'll accept that. But I definitely have an issue not being able to carry along armor that doesn't impact that game to a large effect like the weapons can.

And they gave us etheric light which is used in the ascension node which says in the description that it upgraded weapons to the year 1 maximum. No where did they ever promise you would be able to keep your legendary weapons forever. The quote is in reference to exotics. Legendaries they gave us an upgrade path for year 1. That's it.

  • Read the quote from the op thats the issue. If you make a statement essentially apologizing for a mistake you made in player progression and then go on to do the same thing you apologized for... People are going to make these post and rightfully so.

I'll give you a hint. It has something to do with the parts I'm quoting below. You know, the parts of the update directly above the quoted section. You know, the "context."
“I can only upgrade one existing Exotic a week?” No, Xûr will have many of them in stock. “Is Xûr the only way to obtain new Exotics?” No. They’ll drop as part of new loot tables. “So I have to buy new content to keep up?” No. All players will have options to progress. “Is the upgrade automatic?” No. You’ll choose where you invest the effort. “Does this make all my gear worthless?” No! I’ll be holding onto my Dead Orbit Heavy.

Destiny will continue to provide new ways to evolve Your existing items will still be effective in any encounter The Dark Below will contain exclusive options to level up More powerful Exotics will drop, or be sold by Xûr More powerful Legendaries will drop, or be sold by vendors More powerful Raid gear will drop - and more often! More predictable options will upgrade beloved Exotics Exotic upgrades purchased from Xûr replace weaker items Exotic upgrade paths require much less time and material An upgraded Exotic is more powerful right out of the box
Oh yeah, and he links to his blog right above the pulled quote ( you know, that "context" thing again), and here's what he says:
Existing Legendary gear on display in the Tower will be replaced New Legendary gear will feature higher Attack and Defense values Legendary items will still require Ascendant Materials for upgrades This new, more powerful gear will be available to all players of Destiny Legendary gear will not be as powerful as new Raid gear or Exotics
So you tell me now how you can read the update and still think Bungie promised you that you'd be able to use fatebringer until the game ended.
That quote that people are spamming with was in reference to exotics and the stupid way Bungie have us to upgrade them. Multiple times Deej said that existing legendaries would be replaced by new, more powerful legendaries.
• Did you forget that when you "levelled" up the weapon from vanilla to TDB levels (300-302/3), the entire perk experience tree reset? And back then you had to farm additional glimmer, experience mats, shards, and then a new form of currency - exotic shard, and then had to wait each week for a CHANCE to update your old gear, pay 7000+ for each piece AND a shard (x 6+ pieces, but you can only hold 25,000 glimmer at a time, but can only do transactions for 2 days), because Xur only offered updates on new gear also at random (some of my gear was relegated to old levels because they simply weren't in the rotation - for weeks). So your Invective went from regenerating its own magazine at level 300, to an empty perk chart (which back then didn't unlock exotic perks out of the box), so if you chose to spend the 7000+ glimmer and a shard (7strange coins), you ended up 303 Invective that couldn't really do anything, except be an okay solar shotgun. It was so bad, that Bungie apologized and never went back to that model... However, it also related to Legendaries, that were capped at 300, even though the cap was raised to 331, but it wasn't until 365 were able to use stuff that was 300 again... So there was a period of - you could have your old exotics back - but you had to wait until we randomly chose which ones, and then made you pay a total amount that we didn't let you keep on hand, then we generously removed your progress to let you enjoy leveling it all over again... Your Legendaries are no longer useful in PvE end-game, so you could dismantle those, because 331 gear was desired - but then 365 gear came out with etheric light, so you could get that 300 gear and use it again, but we no longer sell it - so tough. You wanted to keep it? Not enough vault space - tough. So now we'll give you more vault space, to store your stuff, but then we won't let you bring any old gear to play new end-game PvE or leveled PvP, but you can keep some of it, just in case (because Deej said - hold on to that year 1 that you like), but you can't upgrade (yet - or ever, we can't say - because we really don't know). There is a lot more to this trail than the single quote - but it was just the beginning to this blatant mismanagement that we are witnessing over the last 15 months.

Why did you have to give such detailed information from TDB? Those were special times I enjoyed redoing everything and farming glimmer. It was so fun I only releveled one exotic and had enough.

The exotic updates for TDB was a shit show. One of the dumbest decisions Bungie has made. And they've made lots of poor decisions, but almost all of them eventually boil down to a lack of content. But that doesn't mean the people pulling that quote aren't using it out of context. It does not stand for the proposition that Bungie promised us we would be able to use our favorite legendaries for as long as we wanted.
