Idk. By your standards I'd have to say Bungies DLC's are paid updates then?
Have you tried to play vanilla Destiny without TTK?
Edit: with forced updates you have no option but to play with the updates or quit. With Bungies DLC's it's kind of the same thing, except you don't pay content gets removed.
