Quite literally only hours later, a ghost, Arlis, traveled far and wide looking for a his new Guardian friend. The Traveler had sensed a new warrior of the Light.
"Where are ya? I know you're here somewhere..." Arlis spoke with a Texan accent, and he had a small holster around the lower part of his shell.
He flew all over Texas, searching bodies, trying to find his new companion.
"Oh, d***! That can't be! That can't be! No wonder Dad said this one had a fighting spirit..."
Arlis flew to a pile of ash, smoke still rose from the scene. A golden retriever was whimpering and scratching at some charred bones.
"I'm so sorry girl... Don't worry, I'll bring him back." Arlis petted the dog's head.
Arlis scanned the bones a few times. " yep that's him, aight..."
Arlis scanned the bones one last time, and a body reappeared. The person sat up and looked around. "Where am I?... I was dead, I know I was!" shouted the man.
"Howdy partner. Yes, you were dead, but the Traveler wants you to be a Guardian... Hunter from what you are known for."
Haley growled at the 'unknown' person for a while, but the deep, yet soothing voice reminded her. She barked three times before running up and licking the man.
"Hello, girl! Yeah, I missed you too!" Steven rubbed the dog's head and rubbed around her ears.
"Steven Coates, is it?" asked Arlis.
"Yes, and this is... where are they?" Steven believed that sense he was resurrected, so were the rest of his family.
"I'm sorry, but the Traveler only wanted you..."
Steven vigorously searched through the ash! "If you're going to bring me back, bring them back too! Bring me back my family!"
"Steven!! Steven, look!!" Arlis flew up and grabbed Steven's face. "Do you know why the Traveler wanted you?!"
"To weaponize my rage?!"
"No! Well, not just your rage. You were a lawman, and you lived in Texas all your life. You know, better than anyone, that the man in authority is the man with the bigger revolver, and a quicker finger. You also believe, and fight for justice..." said Arlis letting go of Steven.
"Justice? Aight, just let me get dressed for the occasion."
Arlis resuppied Steven with a new pair of boots, a brand new revolver, and a cloak with the Texas lone star.
Steven walked away from the burnt remains. He looked for the tracks that the sparrow's repulser engines make in the soil. Instead, he found his old cowboy hat at the border of the healthy grass and the burnt embers.
"I like the cloak, I plan to keep it, but I think I want my old apparel." Steven picked up the hat and brushed off the dust with his wrist.
Steven took off the hood part of the cloak and put on the hat. He adjusted his belt and holster, which snuggly housed his new hand cannon. He continued to scan over the soil, looking for the tracks. Haley sniffed the ground as well, moving from side to side. Steven stopped and lightly rubbed his fingers over what looked like wakes frozen in time. "I got tracks..."
"Great!" said Arlis as he flew over.
"Let me get the sparrow..." said Steven as he walked away.
"No need!" Arlis summoned the sparrow right in front of Steven, causing him to fall over it.
"This 'Guardian' stuff is going to need some getting used to..."
Steven climbed over the seat and revved the engine. He whistled and patted the shallow basket behind him. Haley jumped up, crawled under Steven's arm, and laid down. Arlis flew over Steven's shoulder. "Let's get them, partner!"
They sped over the plains, following the distinguishable trail!
"These trails are going north! They went to Oklahoma!" shouted Arlis in Steven's ear.
"Oklahoma? Trying to escape the law!" Steven gave the sparrow more gas!
It was little after midday, 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. They found themselves in a small town, barely on the map.
"These are where the tracks end..." Arlis scanned the trails for any deviations further ahead.
"Look. I remember shooting one sparrow dead center of the hood. That one, of three, has a bullet. They're here." Steven pointed to three sparrows outside a building.
Always walk with a good friend.
Here, I tell the untold stories of legends amongst us, within us. Some set things in motion, while others went beyond the impossible. Keep fighting Guardians and tell me. Will you become legend?
