Coming from someone who has smoked a lot of weed, I can confirm that Weed is definitely a gateway drug. It usually leads to Ecstacy, Acid, Shrooms, and maybe Coke. Heroin is for junkies. If you disagree that's fine. This is just my personal experience.

I always felt that had more to do with the culture of people you'd be around while smoking pot. Let's say I started smoking today, with my good friend Bob, and his other friend John comes over the next time we smoke, and he offers us some acid. Is this accurate? I'm just trying to understand.

I absolutely think so. It not only opens your eyes but also makes other options more available to you. Very few drug dealers only sell one thing, and will often cut deals if you buy more than one "product". I used to go to one guy for coke, weed, and pills. He started out as just my weed dealer, but through smoking weed and hearing people talk about how great coke and Percocet were, I decided I wanted to try them. Legalizing weed and making it readily available in dispensaries cuts this part of the equation out. You're not gonna get offered a free sample of heroin at a dispensary lol. I denied it for a long time, but it most definitely is a gateway drug.

I see, and agree with your assertion about legal marijuana.

The U.S. needs to take a page out of Portugal's playbook and legalize everything. The amount of drug related deaths and population of addicts both plummeted once they stopped incarcerating addicts and started sending them to treatment instead. Pre-trial Intervention is similar in the U.S., but you're still more likely to detox in jail instead of an appropriate setting.
