My name is MercurySponge, so this is one about Mercury. IT'S SUPER LONG Legend: The Tunnels of Mercury
"They're dark, and I thought they weren't dangerous. Turns out I was completely wrong. The thought of these tunnels kept me going, when I felt I couldn't anymore. I wanted to explore; until I heard what they really are." - Toland, The Shattered The tunnels of Mercury was a very long chain, a system that connected every underground cavern. When night rose, one headed down to these tunnels to keep safe; many harmful species rose at dusk and went back to hiding at dawn. These tunnels provided a surprising amount of comfort. Several guardians had spent many nights, even weeks, down here. Fewer were able to make it out; the ones that did lived off of decaying animals, sleeping in the cold areas of these warm underground passages. The food that these guardians had to feed off of, the decaying animals, had several diseases; passing on to the guardian who ate it. Once digested, the diseases caused major organ damage, and microbes were eating at the brain; long term brain damage due to this caused the guardian to go brain dead, leading to death. The ones who survived, able to exit these tunnels with the slightest bit of energy they had remaining, tried to find refuge. They had no possibility to find help; no devices to send a distress signal. Instead of dying inside the tunnels, their corpses were found on the surface of Mercury; barely unable to be identified, due to the intense heat of the surface of the tiny planet. One guardian lived to tell the legend of these tunnels; what happened to him to go down there, and how he was able to survive. He described that he surprisingly had a slight tolerance to the diseases of the decaying animals, which allowed him to survive longer than others ever had. He never used any emergency devices, which is how he was able to be rescued; he climbed out of the tunnels, and sent a distress signal. He waited several days, repeatedly sending these signals, until he finally got an answer. He was picked up, brought back to the Tower, and was treated back to normal conditions. Yes, he had a slight tolerance, but not enough to completely stop the disease spreading through his body. The Tunnels of Mercury have yet to be completely discovered, but all that is known is the tunnels are dangerous if you are not prepared.
