Actually, in the IT world, this is a joke. Our server for our company, (a Small retail chain. NOT a multi million playerbase game), costs around 45,000. That's actually on the LOW side. A game like Destiny would require a dedicated climate controlled room called a server FARM. Think about 20-40 (8ft tall x 4ft wide), cases filling one room. Each server costs around 45k-60k. That's EXPENSIVE AS F*** Edit 1: Our server doesn't even have much RAM. Server ram is WAY more expensive than normal desktop ram.

  • While I agree with everything you said, I also must say that Bungie could easily afford all the needed dedicated servers, even at that price. They made more than 500 mill (more than the money used to make the game) on the launch day alone. Since then, with the release of 3 expansions, as well as micro transactions and whatever red bull paid bungie to sponsor them, they have gotten easily another billion (which I'm sure a few hundred mill of that has been used, between their current lousy servers, employees, new content, etc). So even with all these, they probably have about 1 billion left over. I think the reason bungie does not get dedicated servers for Destiny is because they are investing in Destiny 2 more. Really no point in getting good servers now, when this game will be replaced by Destiny two in 6 months or so. However, they will probably have dedicated servers for destiny 2. #TitanMasterRace

  • Servers can support up to 4TB of Ram depending on what version of Windows Server 2012 you're using. There are also different kernals of Linux that can support higher demanding memory.

  • I actually love your comment. Here's my thing, though: if other video game companies/developers can do it...why can't Bungie?

  • Because they never designed their network to operate with a central server architecture. It would be worth redesigning the ENTIRE multiplayer just to implement dedicated servers. Otherwise it'd just be a cluster f*** of work.

  • My company houses servers. I can tell you the amount of money, time, and space is impressive. I work in support so I don't know all the facts but I do remember them putting in the two dozen hvac systems along with the 2000+ gallon backup generator. There's some money in them thar dedicated servers.

  • Yup, +1 buddy. Now imagine the cost of the HVAC, Servers, New building, and Salaries of the new techies they need to hire to maintain the systems. It's waaaaay crazy.

  • It takes a 5ton HVAC unit to keep our dell sever at it optimal temp. And I work for an HVAC company.... 5ton.... That can serve a 3200+ sqft house.

  • The new Exxon HQ in the woodlands tx. Has a bldg for severs only. 32000 sq ft. Has 10 15 ton roof top units. The unit alone cost around $180,000 each. The FCK bill!?!? Run 24/7.

  • And don't forget about the cost of bandwidth or the Man hours it would cost for updates and regular Server maintenance. Not that it's out of their budget to be able to drop 1/2 a mil on this.. but for OP to think it would only $45 a month is laughable.

  • Yup, now imagine the cost of licencing the server software on it's own. Those seemingly small things add up really fast. I'm glad you mentioned the bandwidth though. Not a lot of people know about or understand SLA's

  • The fact you think op was serious is laughable. The fact you're dropping numbers and facts shows you're an educated man- and you think op is serious? That's not laughable, that's just sad.

  • Some of us don't understand sarcasm well. I'm not saying that I do but, there is one thing you should think of. The title of this thread is, " THIS is how much dedicated servers cost?!?! " While that is perfectly fine once you realize that the OP was trying to be satirical, there are probably a lot of users looking here to see the actual cost of the servers. I'm not smashing the OP, Just providing info for those people that are curious. As for your comment about my Education, Thanks! There are a lot of people on this forum that go out of their way to not pull their punches.

  • That's just a piece of a server though. You'd still have to spend money for a PSU, KVM monitor and a rack if you want to have a nice setup. Even then it'd still be a bit empty.

  • Wouldn't they also need different servers in different regions? I would think ping rates will be greatly affected if everyone's connections pinged through one central location in the world. Anyone outside the US would have slower response times due to extra travel times.
